Desiccant dryers remove moisture from compressed air to achieve low pressure dew points of -20 °C, -40 °C and down to -70 °C, which are important for sensitive processes and cannot be achieved with a standard refrigerated dryer.
Desiccant drying units work by adsorbing moisture into alumina- or silica-gel-based granules. Once saturated, the material is regenerated automatically. Two vessels alternate to ensure a continuous air supply: one captures moisture while the other regenerates.
Desiccant dryers can be divided into two basic types:
→ heatless regeneration
Regeneration uses the dryer's own dried air. Capacity therefore needs to be increased to allow for this air volume (15–20%, depending on the type).
→ heated regeneration
Regeneration uses air heated by an external heater; in some applications, compressor waste heat can be used. The main advantage is much more economical operation, offset by higher purchase costs. It is economical for larger applications from 360 m3/h.
All desiccant dryers must be protected from oil and other contaminants, so inlet filters are essential and usually included as standard. A dust filter is fitted at the dryer outlet to capture particles released from the desiccant.
We offer desiccant drying units from Atlas Copco, Alup – Pneumatech and Drytec.
