Computing power in the fight against COVID-19. Join in.
We have made spare computing capacity on our servers available to Folding@Home, a project led by scientists from Stanford University in California.
We have donated spare server computing capacity to Folding@Home, a project led by scientists from Stanford University in California. It has existed for twenty years and focuses on molecular physics, particularly protein-folding simulations and drug testing.
Folding@Home is tackling COVID-19 by analysing the virus structure, particularly the spike protein that enables it to attach quickly and easily to protein receptors on lung cells.
The researchers aim to develop a protein that blocks the viral protein and prevents lung cell infection. Proteins are complex, dynamic structures, so many combinations must be simulated to understand how they work.
Simulation speed and accuracy depend on computing power. Anyone can contribute, allocating CPU and graphics card capacity while preserving normal server operation. The application is available from the Folding@Home website.
